AI Engineering

If you think AI engineering is prompt engineering, you’re missing most of the job.

A prompt is maybe 5% of the system.

The real work starts after the prototype.

You need APIs that are stable, versioned, and observable.

You need data pipelines that clean inputs, handle missing context, and keep retrieval up to date.

You need evaluation, because “it looks good” is not a metric.

You need test sets, regression checks, and failure cases for hallucinations, refusals, and bad tool calls.

You need monitoring in production.

Latency, token usage, cost per request, retrieval quality, error rates, and user feedback.

You need security.

Prompt injection, data leakage, access control, and safe tool execution are not edge cases.

You need fallbacks.

What happens when the model is slow, wrong, or unavailable?

And you need trade-offs.

More context can improve accuracy, but it increases cost and latency.

More autonomy can improve UX, but it also increases risk.

That’s AI engineering.

Not just getting a demo to work.

Building a system that still works on Monday morning, under real load, with real users.
