When to Use Graph

Graph Engineering is worth it when you need control, not just cleverness.
- ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ณ๐น๐ผ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ: mixing code, LLMs, tools, and humans with clear handoffs.
- ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐: approvals, policy checks, payments, deploys, writes to prod.
- ๐ง๐ฎ๐๐ธ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฟ๐๐ป ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐น: fan-out/fan-in across independent subtasks.
- ๐๐โ๐ ๐๐บ๐ฎ๐น๐น: 1โ3 steps usually donโt justify the overhead.
- ๐๐โ๐ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ: plain code or a workflow engine is better.
- ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐/๐๐ผ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฏ๐๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐: graphs multiply routing, state, and token costs.
Start simple. Add graph structure only when it measurably improves reliability, safety, or throughput.
If Step B doesnโt truly need Step Aโs output, donโt chain it.
If one model mistake can derail everything, put that step behind a bounded node with retries/fallbacks.
