AI + Human Code Review

“AI code review will replace human reviewers” is the wrong mental model.
I’ve seen teams treat it like a shortcut: ship more PRs, skim the summary, move on.
That works — until it doesn’t.
The reality is that AI is best used as a first pass, not a final judge.
The real value is in dividing labor properly: AI catches patterns fast, humans bring context, architecture, and business judgment.
Here’s the part most teams miss:
- AI can scan a PR in minutes, rank findings by severity, and surface the risky changes first.
- Humans should focus their attention where it matters: architectural shifts, security-sensitive code, and domain-specific trade-offs.
- If your team is generating more code with AI, you also need to fight comprehension debt and rubber stamping.
- The best systems feed AI with repository context, tickets, architecture docs, and team-specific rules — not just raw diffs.
- And when AI flags something like SQL injection or shell injection, the review becomes a teaching moment, not just a gate.
That’s the shift: AI code review is not about removing humans. It’s about making human judgment sharper, earlier, and more scalable.
How are you using AI in code review today — as a shortcut, or as a real engineering layer?
