Skill Induction Engine

The Skill Induction Engine is the core component responsible for behavioral adaptation in adaptive AI agents. It transforms an agent's raw execution logs and past mistakes into structured, reusable procedural memory so that the agent continuously improves over time.

1. Core Purpose and Mechanism
Without learning, an agent that encounters a tool or execution failure will repeatedly make the same mistake in subsequent runs, wasting time and tokens. The Skill Induction Engine solves this by mining interaction traces—which log conversation turns, tool calls, error messages, and successful fixes—and distilling them into standardized procedures.
- Off-Path Execution: The engine operates outside the live execution loop so it does not add latency or context bloat during active user interactions.
- The LLM Engine Contract: An LLM is provided with a specific instruction contract to process all trace episodes belonging to a topic. It identifies recurring failure patterns and successful fixes, outputting a proposed procedure (formatted as a
skill.mdfile) complete with step-by-step instructions, required tools, error workarounds, and supporting evidence.

2. The Step-by-Step Skill Induction Loop
- Trace Accumulation: Every interaction trace generated by the agent (capturing files inspected, tools called, errors hit, and fixes attempted) is recorded in trace storage, such as Oracle Agent Memory.
- Skill Enhancement Proposal: The Induction Engine analyzes the accumulated traces for a specific topic (e.g.,
run-the-tests) and drafts an updated, multi-step skill procedure. - The Human-in-the-Loop Review Gate: Before a proposed skill update is deployed, it goes to a human reviewer who compares the current active version against the proposed version. The human reviewer can:
- Approve: Promotes the enhanced skill to active status in the agent's Skill Box.
- Reject with Reason: Sends constructive feedback back to the engine so it can generate better proposals in future cycles.
- Skill Box Promotion & Runtime Execution: Once promoted to the Skill Box (a version-controlled repository of active procedures), the agent automatically loads the updated skill on future matching tasks, avoiding past errors.

3. Why the Human Review Gate Is Critical
The course highlights two key reasons why human oversight is required before skill promotion:
- Compounding Errors: Approval immediately converts a text proposal into permanent agent behavior. If a flawed skill slips through, the agent will execute the bad procedure on every matching task, compounding damage across runs.
- Poisoned Traces: Because traces reflect raw data gathered from external environments, incorrect or maliciously injected instructions could be captured. Human review acts as a security gate to stop a "poison trace" from becoming permanent behavior.
- Accountability: Requiring human approval ensures every skill in the Skill Box has a human owner and every rejection teaches the engine what to refine.
